My approach has grown out of working with hundreds of clients over the years and from my understanding of dynamic anatomy and rehabilitative exercise. I design exercise and yoga programs that help people gain the strength and mobility needed to get ‘The Job’ done. The Job includes everything daily life asks of you plus the activities you enjoy, be it hiking, gardening, or swing dancing.
I can also help you improve the ergonomics of your life–such as desk height, kitchen set-up, or job-related postures and repetitive motions–and I teach recuperative practices that can ease or prevent over-use injuries.

UNIQUE EXERCISES: Simple moves that kick your butt

 

People often comment that many of my exercises are unlike any they’ve done before, even if they are long-time exercisers. And they are happy with how much stronger these exercises make them. Among other things, I help you find and strengthen you deepest core muscles to stabilize across key joints. This approach helps with a wide range of postural issues. I make sure your work-outs are safe and effective–so you get stronger and have fewer aches and pains.

YOGA BASICS: Foundational poses and breath-work

 

I primarily teach yoga fundamentals, focusing on keystone postures and sequences such as down dog and sun salutation. Although I also teach other poses, I emphasize quality over quantity to help you access and strengthen your deepest core muscles and optimize your practice. This type of yoga is very strengthening overall. You learn which poses will be most beneficial for you and how to modify or substitute for poses that are risky. Breath-work, another yoga fundamental I teach, brings mindfulness into your practice and has many additional benefits. 
Yoga basics isn’t for beginners only. Diving deep with fundamentals helps advance any yoga practice.

How does this work?

We make a plan

  We start with an in-take session that includes a health/fitness history, a discussion of your goals, and postural, strength and mobility assessments. We use all of this to start developing your exercise/yoga routine and overall game plan.

We get you going

  Weekly 60-minute sessions move you forward and keep you accountable.
  I write out your routine with detailed instruction so you know just what to do and can exercise on your own with confidence.

We keep you moving forward

  With regular up-dates to your exercise/yoga routine so you keep making progress and avoid plateaus.

WHERE?

Our sessions can be home-based (we can tailor your routine to your space). Or we can meet in Belfast or Camden in a studio space. Of course, gyms work better for some people, and I can oversee a gym program.
I began my career in NYC so I know how to work with small spaces. You also don’t need much equipment. In most cases an exercise mat, a physio ball, a tennis ball, and some weights or resistance tubing are all we need to get you going.

Virtual sessions

On-line personal training really does work. We can do this remotely.
If you are in Portland, Boston, or New York we can do an initial session or two in person (including a fitness/alignment assessment) and then work together via video chat.
